Introducing Melany Willis

Melany WillisHi! My name is Melany and I would just like to start out by saying that I am so excited about working with this great group of woman. A few things about me. I am a mother of three beautiful children. My kids are mostly grown now and I have really enjoyed watching them grow. My oldest is actually an adult, it feels so weird to say that, and my youngest is 12 but acts like a little adult. I am very passionate about birth and I loved everything about being pregnant.

I knew after the birth of my first child that I needed to find some way to work with pregnant mommas. I was pretty satisfied with my birth experience at that time and I felt so empowered that I wanted to share that experience; to find some way to help other woman feel what I was feeling. I considered my options, but at that time the birth world was not what it is becoming today and my options seemed limited. I became a medical assistant in hopes of landing a job in an OB/GYN office, but after doing my internship there I realized that was not the option I was looking for, but I continued working in the medical field not knowing what else to do.

It wasn’t until I found out that I was pregnant with my second child that I even heard the term doula. I had a wonderful, sweet neighbor who started explaining my options, which at the time I didn’t even know that I had, and I knew then and there that I wanted to be a doula. What better way to help woman have that empowering experience then to educate them about their options and support them physically and emotionally through their labor and delivery? My second and third births were even better than the first because now I was an active participant in making decisions and planning for a peaceful and calm birth. My experiences solidified my decision to become a doula, but now I couldn’t imagine balancing the unpredictability that comes with being a doula and the craziness of raising 3 small children.

It took me some time to make my dream a reality, but I could not be happier that I am finally on the right path. I am a very new doula, but a very experienced mother with 3 birth experiences of my own. I completed my DONA training in July and have attended 2 births since that time. I am looking forward to shadowing and mentoring with the amazing women of PLD and gaining more experience through my work with my own clients.

I am also a passionate and creative photographer. I love photographing birth in a black and white photo journalist style that lends itself well to capturing the intense emotion of childbirth and creating a beautiful visual birth story that you and your new family can enjoy for generations. I also offer maternity and newborn photography in a more colorful and modern style that can be combined with the birth session to commemorate the entire journey.

I am looking forward to this exciting new adventure and I can not wait to share in the journeys of so many beautiful and amazing birth goddesses.
